First Light Tunnel Book

5” x 6” x 1.5”

Watercolor, paper, chipboard, thin plastic

2019

“First Light” was created in response to an independent research assignment on a chosen book binding/book making technique for the “Bookmaking Book Arts and Publication Design” course at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. Though the imagery is simply a girl opening a curtain and window, the scene is brought to life because the book is “read” by looking through the cut openings or negative space of each page, creating the illusion of depth. The imagery was inspired by my personal love of watching the sun rise and watching its light come into my room upon first waking up, hence a small yet powerful moment. The style of the window and stone wall is inspired by a Tuscan village.
