“Free Man”

Born Karol Wojtyla, John Paul II had a childhood nickname “Lolek” meaning “free man.” Growing up in 1920’s Poland, he was athletic and academic, enjoying soccer, theater and learning different languages. He became the 263rd pope in 1978. The brown scapular and miraculous medal represent his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary.
