Flowers have long been associated with Mary’s virtues since medieval times. Among the most popular is, of course, the rose. It represents purity, love, beauty, and sorrow. Hydrangeas symbolize an abundance of grace and gratitude because of their large, full blooms. Marigolds, or “Mary’s Gold” symbolize her heavenly glory and her sorrows. They were often signs of mourning because of their strong smell and apparent “weeping” from dew. Violets’ small size symbolizes Mary’s humility and modesty as “the handmaid of the lord.” Their purple color reflects her royalty as the Mother of God.

Any nature lovers may look at a flower and be reminded of Mary, and thus be drawn closer to Jesus, as nature is a direct reflection of God’s beauty and majesty as our Creator.
